StreamRipper
I miss making cassette tape compilations from radio. I loved listening to my radio loaded with a new TDK SA-90 in the cassette deck and fingers spread waiting to press the play and record button at the same time. I thought about buying some tapes and doing it all again. But then decided not to.
Enter StreamRipper. Fuck! This is so awesome, I thought I should it would make a nice item for Geek Gods.
Here is some info from the page:
Streamripper started as a way to separate tracks via Shoutcast's title-streaming feature. This has now been expanded into a much more generic feature, where part of the program only tries to "hint" at where one track starts and another ends, thus allowing a mp3 decoding engine to scan for a silent mark, which is used to find an exact track separation.
What does all that mean? It means you can connect to your favourite Internet Radio Station and save the stream to your hard drive! Some more info from the home page:
With the emergence of file sharing protocols such as Napster, Gnutella, and now Mojonation and Freenet, the average Internet user can download nearly any mp3 he wants in a matter of no time, but many times people don't know what they want. Streamripper allows you to download an entire station of music. Many of these mp3 radio stations only play certain genres, so you can now download an entire collection of goa/trance music, an entire collection of jazz, punk rock, whatever you want.
Heres how it works. Using GNU/Linux, I simply type this command and away it goes:
streamripper http://4.79.65.109:6170 -r -q
Connecting...

The pic for Ben's article came from here.
Zappa testified a Senate Commitee hearing in 1985 after legislation was proposed to ammend pornography legislation to include records.
I found a video of it here. Interesting stuff. Not much has changed, huh.
What the fuck is that?
Is there a missing link? (No, not you, Baron)
I was half way through the article, and had to go out and see the goatwitch CD launch so I never finished it! Great gig too...
