Earthlings?

EARTHLINGS CD
Spaceships are so cool.

Earthlings? are one of my favourite bands of all time. I have a lot of favourite bands of all time, but this one I treasure above all because I found them for myself, tracked down a copy on the internet, and felt like a kid at Christmas when the parcel arrived from the States.

I bought Earthlings? self-titled album on spec. I'd never even heard a song, and had no idea what to expect, but with a lineup of musicians like this band has, I felt like I couldn't miss.

I mean, take a look: Pete Stahl (Goatsnake, Scream, Wool, Desert Sessions, Orquesta del Desierto); David Catching (Eagles of Death Metal, Queens of the Stone Age, yellow no.5, gnarltones, Desert Sessions, Mark Lanegan, Masters of Reality, Tex and the Horseheads, modifiers, Ringling Sisters, Arugula, Mondo Generator); Molly McGuire (Yellow no.5, Arugula, The Spores, gnarltones, Rhudabega, Mondo Generator); Adam Maples (Kingsizemaybe, Desert Sessions, Sea Hags, Legal Weapon, Orquesta del desierto); Gene Trautmann (Queens of the Stone Age, Desert Sessions, Miracle Workers, ringling sisters) and the late great Fred Drake, founder of the Rancho de la Luna recording studios responsible for forging the desert rock sound.

Man, I'm out of breath.

With a lineup like that, I was expecting a heavy, Kyuss-style sound. Far from it, dude. Far from it.

Earthlings? are an experimental psychedelic band that are more Brian Eno than Hawkwind. Lush instrumental arrangements feature often, but the band have an excellent sense of groove and an 80s pop sensitivity for melody.

I'm going to invoke Zappa and say writing about this music is beside the point, but who better to describe the band than the band themselves:

Dave Catching
Dave Catching.

'Earthlings? is the sound of space, time, stars and sand. Malfuntioning devices and quiet mistakes. Guitars on fire, amplifiers exploding, synthesizers drooling with pleasure, while pulsating, thunderous drums march on, or lay down to rest. Friendship, sex and love dictate. Everyone is invited.'

Sound fair enough?

Have a listen to this track, Disco Marching Kraft, from their self-titled EP. Or better still, track down a copy here. And let me know your thoughts.

I dearly wanted to put an AWESOME Earthlings track up, but I respect the laws of copyright, and linked to one you can already get legally.

BUY THE ALBUM, #1!

What do you guys think of the song posted?

Come on, I thought this was a music site? Can your calcified fingers afford to click and listen? Do you have a set of headphones? Slip them in the jack. Go on.
