First Listen: “Scar Sighted” by Leviathan

A new release from Californian black metal musician Jef Whitehead (a.k.a Wrest a.k.a Leviathan) is always cause for some celebration.  His latest, Scar Sighted, is now available for purchase and preview on the Profound Lore bandcamp site

I’m no expert on this guy’s music but I have dipped into his extensive discography here and there on occasion, with my favorite work of his so far being the song Unfailing Fall Into Naught which appeared on a split record with Xasthur–another one-man black metal project from the USA.

The new record Scar Sighted represents an impressive change from previous Leviathan output that I’ve heard. While tracks like Wicked Fields of Calm have long interludes of the dissonant minor-chord tremelo-picking that characterizes traditional black, this album is packed full of surprises. There’s elements of death and prog clearly on display, and the shorter song lengths and frequent leaps from idea to idea in the space of a few short minutes make these songs really interesting to listen to.

On my first pass through, I would say the second half is the stronger side with more twin-kicks per square minute (thanks Nate) to keep any metalhead happy.

This is shaping up to be a super-solid album and one I will enjoy becoming better acquainted with.

I’m not so sure about some of the spoken-word type “samples” will stand the test of time, but musically and conceptually, Scar Sighted shows every sign of making it into my list of “go-to” albums when cathartic release is necessary.
